Título

WHAT A STRANGE THROMBOSIS! IS THIS A TUMOR?

Introdução

Neoplastic lesions can also obstruct vessels, mimicking deep vein thrombosis (DVT), making diagnosis difficult and delaying.
Delaying the diagnosis of a neoplastic lesion can put the patient's life at risk, a situation unfortunately common in most tumor cases, which are wrongly diagnosed as DVT.

Objectives: review specific signs that can indicate and distinguish the characteristics of the main benign and malignant endovascular neoplastic lesions and narrow the differential diagnosis.
Methods: We queried cases to illustrate the imaging patterns of endovascular tumors.

Descrição

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a multifactorial condition and its precise clinical diagnosis is complex, due to the wide variety of causes.
The pathophysiology comprises stasis, hypercoagulability and endothelial injury. There are several predisposing factors.
However, in rare cases, endovascular tumors can be misinterpreted as DVT, delaying the diagnosis and the treatment of these patients. Some signs can help to differentiate these conditions and even try to narrow the differential diagnostics among solid tumor endovascular lesions and indicate the procedures to reach the final diagnosis and treatment.
Conclusion: Radiologist must be aware on signs that suggest an atypical thrombosis. We review specific signs that can indicate and distinguish the characteristics of the main benign and malignant endovascular neoplastic lesion.
